Off-Season 30 Man Max Roster Size Discussion

Since this is the first off-season with the 30 man roster rule in effect I was going over a few of the complications that we might come to and try to come up with solutions to suggest to everyone.

The biggest issue I see is someone going into the waiver with 30 players and not having 3 guys plucked from him. Last year we went into waiver saying that if you were over 30 players you could drop a guy, I’d like to avoid that option this year because I find it does give an advantage to a team to not have to make decisions until after the waiver draft plays out. Example if I sign 30 players and only 1 gets plucked, at the end I’ll have 32 players (yay math!), after the waiver I’d be able to decide which players to keep depending on how the waiver went, which obviously give me an advantage to being able to make decisions after the fact.

My suggestion is this, from the end of the season until the waiver deadline you can be over 30 players, to ease deal making in the off-season BUT you can only protect/resign a max of 27 players. This way if no one gets plucked they will still only be at 30 players on the roster.

Teams with 30 players will not be able to participate in the auction draft.

Teams cannot use draft picks to go over the 30 player max, once a team reaches 30 players, all of their remaining picks will be burnt (obviously they can be traded before).

Thoughts or comments? I’m not asking for a vote yet, I just want to get a feeling of what people think and open it up to ideas if anyone has something.

  1. I disagree limiting the resign/protected lists to 27 players. I would prefer punishing a GM for being over 30 after waivers if he takes the risk of resigning all of his 30 players and none of them or only 2 of them getting selected. The punishment would be losing their most expensive player or players depending on how many players they are over.

    • Issue I have with punishment after waiver is that people could agree not to pluck from someone in order for him to lose his most expensive player. I know that is X-Files level of conspiracy theory but I’d still rather avoid that if possible.

  2. yes but then he also keeps every other single player he has resigned since they won’t be plucked in this conspiracy theory which could be advantageous to him.

  3. if we go 27 man-rule, it would have to be for not this off-season but the next off-season as some people have made trades accumulating assets up to the 30 person limit

    • that is not necessarily true, there is plenty on time to make moves before having to submit the protect/resign list for the waivers this summer.

Someone having potentially 33 players is problem that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later

      • I still think them losing their most expensive guy/guys is the punishment. They take a risk. Now you are setting a different rule for a different time of the year. 30 max all the time but not right before waivers. Seems odd to me.

        • Its kinda like the salary cap, there is no limit during the off-season, but everything has to be in order by a certain date.
In this case, there is no limit of players you can have in the off-season, except you can only protect/ resign 27 of them come the waiver date.

We’ll see what some of the others have to say and go from there.
